Lead Tetraphenyl, Pb(C6H5)4

Lead Tetraphenyl, Pb(C6H5)4, is formed by heating brombenzene, in ethylacetate solution, with lead-sodium alloy, or by the Grignard reaction, i.e. by the action of lead chloride on an ethereal solution of magnesium phenyl bromide. This reaction serves to separate lead from radium-D. Lead tetraphenyl crystallises in needles which melt at 224°-225° C., and is converted by boiling nitric acid into lead diphenyl nitrate, (C6H5)2Pb(NO3)2, whence other salts can be prepared.

Lead tetra-p-tolyl and the corresponding di-p-tolyl salts also exist.
